George Vitolo, an avid cyclist and local here in Laguna Beach has been inspired by Hans Reys Wheels 4 Life organization to help raise awareness and money to fund bicycles for third world countries. He will be riding in the 24 Hours of Adrenalin - Idyllwild this September in an effort to raise money on a per lap basis.

On Saturday June 18th @ 8 p.m. we'll be having a fundraiser and live screening of the Wheels 4 Life documentary. There will be raffles and prizes as well as beverages and light refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there!

Intense M9 FRO

We finally put the finishing touches on the Intense M9 FRO (For Race Only) frame and bike.

When Ned came in to pick-up his bike, he was ecstatic to see its completion. We spent 3 hours dialing the bike in to his specific riding style. What is amazing about Ned is, is that he's 53 years old! He started DH riding when he was 43 and has participated in the Masters World DH competition several times. Proof that it's never to late to try or start anything! Thanks for being such a great example and customer Ned.

Urban Downhill

Lately in the shop, some of the guys have been watching YouTube videos on "urban downhill" courses. These videos have some of the gnarliest downhill courses I have seen. Though I am a "roadie", I always love cruising YouTube for anything cycling related. I especially keep a look out for good crashes (mountain or road). I of course want my fellow cyclists to be safe, but lets face it, there are some jaw dropping crash videos that truly rock!

However, some of my other favorite videos come from the "downhill races." The great thing about watching these videos is that every second is intense. As opposed to watching the Tour de France where the flat stages get a little slow, these videos are like watching a train wreck! They leave you in amazement that these riders can rip through these courses at that speed at that degree of difficulty. Take a look at these two, the first one is out Valparaiso Chile and the second is out of Brazil. The funny thing I noticed was I could not find any "urban downhill" races in the United States....hmmm?

The " Bike Mechanic"

It occurred to me on a 50 mph descent coming down Onyx Summit near Big Bear that I trust my mechanic. I know at those speeds, on a 1/4 inch of rubber, you should be completely focused on the road ahead but my mechanic seemed very important at the time. The funny thing is that I won't step foot on a roller coaster (probably because of the people running them) but I have no problem screaming through a mountain switch back, trusting that my bike will perform. I think that it speaks volumes that you entrust not only your bike but also your personal safety to these people. So that brings me to the question, how do you find or know who is a trust worthy mechanic?

I guess finding a good bike mechanic is like finding a good auto mechanic. People have the same questions, "are they overcharging, is it a quality repair, will the car implode?" Fortunately for automobiles there are ASE Certified mechanics, AAA rated shops and good ole' internet reviews. But what is out there for bicycle mechanics?

First of all there are a couple "accredited" bicycle schools out there. The two main schools are Barnetts Bicycle Institute and United Bicycle Institute. Both are great schools, but there are also some "unaccredited" schools that also give mechanics a solid base, such as, Park Tool School and Broadway Bicycle School. Actually, the cool thing about the Park Tool School is that many local shops offer a Park Tool Program (http://www.parktool.com/clinics_training/parktoolschool.asp). This program introduces the novice cyclists to entry level mechanics that they can complete at home. The only thing to keep in mind is that your mechanic may have or have not attended these schools. If they have not, that is not necessarily a bad thing. These schools give mechanics a solid base and credentials, but there is no replacing solid life experience of turning a wrench.

Other than the schools, you can always do an internet search and punch in, " bike shop ratings" or "bicycle mechanic reviews" (or something of the sort). There will be a plethora of information that you can review that is written by your local cycling enthusiasts. One of my favorite sites for reviews is Socalmtb.com. There is a great option in the top left corner that lets you select the state and area in which you would like to review. So no matter where you are in the United States you can review your local shop.

Some other options I would suggest is to visit all your local bike shops and become familiar with the one that best fits your personality. You need to get to know the employees or the owner. They will give you huge insight to what level of quality and expertise they possess. Also, wandering through the shop inspecting and testing the built bikes on the floor is another way to feel the build quality performed by that mechanic. As opposed to test driving a car (for example), that comes built from the factory, the bike builds happen right there in the shop. The nice thing is that you can feel how smooth and tight the breaking is and how crisp the derailleurs shift. I feel that experiencing their build quality is key before you entrust them with your safety and your bike.

Zipp 404 Carbon Clincher

First of all, there is no denying the cool factor of these wheels. Just to look at them they are screaming fast. The only problem is that we need to be rational when looking to invest hard earned funds. Luckily the performance of these wheels out-weigh the looks. Between the smoothness of the bearings and the stiffness of the rim, these Zipp's are the total package.

Let's look at "some" of the pro's of these wheels. One thing that you will notice about the wheels is that they are wider than the earlier Zipp 404's. This thickness not only adds to their snappy acceleration and stiffness but their outrageous aerodynamics (Zipp 404 Aerodynamics Chart). I put them through their paces on the flats, hills and turns, just about anywhere I could test them. Through all the testing of the wheels I noticed that they may not be the lightest wheels on the market, but they easily accelerate and they are kept at speed with little effort.

To be fair, we do need to look at the con's of having the new Zipp 404's such as .... everyone asking to borrow them for race day! Other than that, I would truly suggest not using them on windy days. Due to the deep cross section of the rims they can act like a rudder in heavy wind.

All in all, these wheels are spectacular. If you are looking for some serious training wheels or excellent race day wheels, look no further. The Zipp 404's are a solid investment for the roadie or the triathlete looking for the best of the best for their equipment.

Bicycle Awareness

Thanks to Justin at Laguna Cyclery, I was introduced to another local blog that talks about cycling in the Laguna Beach community. The blog is http://lagunastreets.blogspot.com and it is loaded with useful information and current issues on the Laguna Beach cycling scene.

One of the subjects that LagunaStreets talks about is the "Complete Streets Campaign." This law was enacted on both the federal and state levels. I think this law will significantly change the cycling environment in Laguna Beach, hopefully for the better. Here is an excerpt that was pulled directly from the LagunaStreets blog: "Complete streets meets the needs of all street users including pedestrians, bicyclists, users of public transit, motorists, children, the elderly, and the disabled. Complete Streets Policy is now the law at the federal and state level. Cities around California seek to integrate "The Complete Streets Act" AB 1358, and "Redesigning Communities to Reduce Greenhouse Gases" SB 375 into the Transportation Element of their General Plan, as mandated by both state and federal legislation."

This type of information may not be well known in the community but thankfully there are local Laguna Beach supporters who are working to educate us on current affairs. Thanks LagunaStreets!!

Bianchi Infinito Coast to Coast

So here it is!! This is one of the newest bike builds at Laguna Cyclery. This is the Bianchi Infinito, which belongs to the Coast to Coast line from Bianchi. The Coast to Coast line from Bianchi is built for optimal riding position, maximum performance and minimal fatigue. After closer review of its fit and finish, then a test ride along Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, I was considering one for my stable.

Just looking at the bike, you can see that Bianchi spent a considerable amount of time on the presentation. The lines of the bike are fluid and the monocoque design allows Bianchi to add some nice detail around the head tube and through the chain stays. Beyond the smooth lines and fluid design, Bianchi kept the frame incredibly clean by internally routing all the brake and derailleur cables. The internal routing keeps the bike clean and allows the viewer to focus on the frame design rather than exposed cables. This frame exemplifies the attention to beauty that this italian frame maker has always been famous for.

After drooling over the fit and finish of this frame I decided that it needed a little exercise up and down Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach. Riding this bike is where it really came alive! Since this frame was born, bred and MANUFACTURED in Italy, I could really feel the attention to responsive ride dynamics that Bianchi builds into all its frames. While putting this bike through its paces I noticed that it had a nice long wheel base and it was impressively steady at high speed descents. Also, since it has a fairly tall head tube, the riding position was comfortable and it would be the perfect bike for those century rides through the mountains. Another aspect of the frame I enjoyed was that the torsional stiffness of the monocoque design. This stiffness added to the ease of getting the bike to speed and staying there!

As much as I enjoyed riding this bike today, I was happy to see it found a new home. Yes, it was sold today, but hopefully, it will not be the last time I run into this bike. Luckily, I can look forward to the next build at Laguna Cyclery. On that note, the next review will be focusing on a new Ibis Mojo. I will post the pictures and reviews the second I get my hands on that ride.

SRAM Red goes black!! Newest color option!!

Here is the latest from SRAM:

As of this morning (2/22/2011), SRAM announced from Mallorca, Spain a new color option for the industry leading SRAM Red groupset....BLACK!! In an effort to answer market requests for a more customizable line, SRAM has introduced SRAM Red in a black color combination. The black groupset will bring black front/rear derailleurs, black brakes and a crankset with black anodized chain rings. However, the shifters with the silver/red graphics go unchanged.

Thanks to our close friends at SRAM, Laguna Cyclery was one of the first bike shops to partake in an early viewing of the new SRAM Red groupset in black. It was an exciting opportunity to view SRAM's newest addition and find out that the new SRAM Red groupset will be commercially available March 2011!!

Mullholland Recon

Yesterday, I went to Calabasas to recon some of the climbs on the upcoming Mulholland Challenge. It was a teriffic day with very little traffic, almost no wind and no incidents. I went with a couple of other guys who have done the Challenge before, so I knew they'd be able to give me good advice on the tempo to ride the climbs and what to watch for on the descents. If you follow the map carefully, you'll see where I overshot a turn while dropping down to PCH! Luckily I escaped with only having to put my foot down, but boy was it scary there for a few seconds! Recovery Ride

The sun was shining and the weather was sweet! I crossed paths with a couple of friends and really enjoyed being out in the sunshine! The legs felt really good and I think the data shows I recovered well from yesterday....check it out!

Yesterday's Awesome Ride

Yesterday's ride was awesome! With several 20-30 minute sections with NO cars, this area around Bonsall is becoming my favorite place to ride. Its only 40 minutes (by car) from the shop, and provides so many possibilities for variations, this is going to turn into a regular Sunday excursion for me! We started earlier than two weeks ago when we went down there, and just missed a huge down pour that started about 5 minutes after we got to the car! We did get drizzled on for the last 3 miles or so, and would have avoided getting wet altogether but my training partner Evan flatted about 4 miles out. You'll see on the route where we pulled off the side of the road to fix it. When the repair was finished, we could see the squall headed right for us! We went from dry roads to wet in about 30 seconds after we started rolling off from the repair.

Bonsall/Fallbrook Ride Tomorrow January 30th

Tomorrow, I'm going to repeat a ride I did two weeks ago with my friend Evan. Its a great ride, with very little traffic and plenty of climbing. The pace of the ride will be low aerobic zones, to work on fat burning efficiency. So, while the pace won't be very hot, it will be tough in that it will take discipline to accomplish the ride in the prescribed HR zones. Just upgraded to Widows7 and in doing so, consolidated a ton of photos. One that I came across is from 1999. Its me (on the front) with my buddy Brian Lopes. We were riding in a two-man team-timetrial called The Tour de Gruene.

We finished second, less than 30 seconds behind the winners Patrick McCarty and Carlson after the 40k's were through. It was a great day!

I've been a fan of Italian bicycles for over 25 years now, and I've seen some really beautiful bicycles in my day. I've seen bikes in person after only seeing them in magazines for years and been astounded at how much more beautiful they are in person. I've been to Italy and seen bikes I've never heard of. I've seen bikes from Italy I wasn't sure how to pronounce! But I've never had anyone bring in to my shop such an unfamiliar beauty as this 1999 ZINI!

Do your best to Google the brand and you'll probably come up with nothing....apparently, this is a former professional rider who has been retired for years building a small number of frames for local professionals and enthusiasts alike. The bike came to me with some Ambrosio tubulars built on FRM hubs, both product lines are nearly impossible to obtain in the United States, but the rider prefered not to ride on tubulars anymore so I traded him for the Mavic Ksyrium SL wheelset you see here.

Not bike related, but we just had a fun day at Disneyland and man-o-man did we have fun! One of the coolest things we did was play this 'shuffle-board' game....its a 3-D image that is played on the floor! The surface is like a giant I-Pad and the game is played by running on top of it and pushing around the images! What will they think of next?! DT Swiss Tricon Wheels Now on Display on the Beautiful Delta 7 Bike!

Demo-Wheelset: The wheels feature many interesting designs. The spoke lacing or “crow foot” as coined by DT Swiss, is a popular lacing pattern used in UK in the 70s. Tricon has one radial spoke and two crossed spokes banded together on the hub flange. They all function as one to provide maximum stiffness and torque transmission. Mavic K10 Tire and Wheelset available!

With the help of their proprietary ISM sidewall milling Sean said that the 2100-gram complete K10 system will be the lightest Ksyrium that Mavic has ever produced at a claimed weight of 1,470-grams. The 23mm tires aren't front/rear specific and are supposed to weigh in at 225-grams each although ours hit the scales at a still light 245-grams. Incredibly, the system inner tube weighed 105-grams!

The K10 wheels run with the “limited edition” tag because only 1000 pairs of the $1400 hoops will be brought to the States.

A few years ago, I had the treat to meet and hire a fella named Chris Del Bosco. Chris is/was a World-Class 'Down Hill' mountain bike racer and was a BIG help at the shop. No one (exept BL) was faster around here. Ever.

Chris was there when history was made Sunday when he won the Skiier X finals! Chris is enroute to the Olympics and this pre-Olympic primer has us all stoked he is on top of his game!

Sunday's Ride to the Holy Jim Waterfalls!

Its not often that the rivers meant to flow from the Santa Ana Mountain range to the ocean actually do....but the wonderful rain we've had recently have the mountain streams flowing! Our normally dry, arid mountain range is now in full bloom. Today we rode through a former Fig Tree orchard that seemed to be breathing new life, past ferns and other plant life that by summer time will probably be gone.

My riding buddy Evan Teske said that in his 25 years of riding & hiking the trails we rode, he'd never seen so much water and the hill sides so green and lush with foliage. We'll definitely be back next weekend for a longer ride than todays 3.5 hour loop. Call me or shoot an e-mail if you want to join us....we gotta get up there and enjoy it while the gettin's good!

This is my first stab at using my FLIP video camera to post video to my blog, so let me know what your experience is....does it load fast? slow? how is the sound quality? I'll continue to work with my Flip to bring you guys footage from my adventures, new stuff in the store, and that kind of stuff....I'll look forward to hearing from you!

Time iClic Arrives!

After much fanfare and an exciting debut at last years "Euro-Bike" trade show in Milan, and lots of anticipation, the new Time iClic has finally arrived! This pedal does away with the only viable fault in the RXS pedal: it's Pitbull-like security made it inherently hard to clip into.

The new iClic pedal uses a retainer that holds the cleat lock open when you clip out so that minimal effort is required for re-entry. The cleat litarally falls into place. In fact, these are the easiest pedals to clip into on the market, yet they still hold your foot in like vise-grips. The Time I-Clic pedal also features a new carbon blade spring that replaces the traditional coil-wound steel spring. This shift saves weight over the previous RXS design. All the other Time trademarks remain like the rotational and lateral float. The platform is even wider now, and the new cleats have an even lower profile. The cleats are also lighter thanks to the elimination of the brass cam which has been substituted for a composite one.

I received both the iClic carbon ($250) and iClic Fiberflex ($150).

I'm excited to let eveyone know we've just received our first Ridley frameset: a Dean time-trial bike! We are going to be sending this frame set out to be custom painted by Troy Lee Designs, so keep your eye on our blog to see it in the next couple of weeks. Next week we will see our first shipment of complete bikes from Ridley with the Excalibur and Orion models and NOAH framesets.

This is Trinity, the Visionary behind Pedaler Urban Cycling Apparel, filling up our very cool display rack she had made* from recycled bicycle parts! Its been over a year in the making, but Pedaler apparel has finally arrived and I love it!

Pedaler is riding gear that doesn't make you look like a "bike-geek" or a "fag-in-spandex" any more than a "dorky biker dressed up like a cross between a surfer and someone embarrassed to be a 'biker.' "

I've been a cyclist since I was 6, and at 38 I have been called lots of names for just riding a bike ("Bikes are for kids jackass! Get off the road!") or for shaving my legs (huh? does that really make you faster?). I know every sterotype of every segment of our cool receation that people poke fun of and put down. And while guys like MC Spandex may make fun of 'fixsters' (and I will jump on board and rap with him!) this line is NOT for dorks or anyone to be made fun of.

Pedaler's goal ha created apparel to endure the issues associated with cycling in general, yet stylish enough to be considered street wear.

Its been weeks of freezing temperatures across the country, all the while we've been sitting pretty here in Laguna Beach with nary a night below 45 and most days have been very, very comfortable. The surf has been good and everyone hasn't skipped a beat from their normal active out-door lifestyles here. But that all changed last Sunday when the "Hundred Year Storm" rolled into town....

Everyday someone comes into the store from somewhere else (like today a fella came from Buffalo, NY) & these visitors are genuinely dumbstruck at how nice the weather is at this time of year here. Well, over the past two days (and forecasted through Friday) we've gotten a pretty good dose of reality with more rain falling than has fallen over the past 3 years combined!

Today, my girl-friends' car got swamped while she taught class at Analisse's School in Laguna Canyon! This photo was taken well-after the kids were evacuated and the administration was finally allowed to wade to their cars to retrieve them from the flood waters of Laguna Creek (spilling out from the "Lagoons" our town is named after).

A Special "THANK YOU" to the kind Laguna Beach Police Chief who actually retrieved her car so she didn't have to endanger herself by wading into the rushing current of mud and rain-water spilling out from the creek.

More than 15 inches is expected tomorrow....I've done what I can to get prepared, I think we'll be alright. Thank you all for so many calls to make sure we're okay. Thank you very much, I'm very flattered so many of you have called!

Now, if I can just get word from our friend Louie (who is building an AWSOME artisit live/work space) is okay, I'll sleep ok...

Sunday, just before the rain came, I put on my long-sleeved jersey & fleece lined bibs, put hot-oil on my legs and jumped on my Ibis Hakkalugi for one last good ride before we were set to be socked-in. The air was electric...I could feel the rain was coming with huge storm clouds over head and cool gusts of wind that 'smelled' like rain. I stayed dry until mile 20 when the big drops started to fall. The drop from top of the world was precarious with Temple Hills being just wet enough to be slippery and my tires set at 40 psi weren't instilling confidence at 40 mph....check out the file above to see my route and stats. If you guys chime in, maybe we can start a regular 'cross ride from the shop 1-2 days per week!

New Years Day Ride: Start at the shop at 7:30

We all know the drill....New Year's Eve parties leave most folks hung over in bed....and that's great news for we Cyclists!!! That means that the roads are open and free for the most part of traffic! Join us at 7:30 at the shop if you wanna partake in an Orange County Cycling tradition of riding with all your buds to start your 2010 off right! We will ride north until we see a much larger group of about 600 heading down from Long Beach. We'll flip-it when we see them and ride with them down to Dana Point where the group stops and regroups at the Sheriff's tower at the head of the bike trail that leads up to San Juan. Personally, I will be riding back to Laguna after that, but if you want to log some big miles the rest of the group heads up into the Valley from there and loops back down to the coast after 35 miles inland. I'll hope to see you here in the morning! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL AND THANK YOU FOR HELPING MAKE 2009 ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR HERE AT LAGUNA CYCLERY.

Here is Justin with one of my newest demo bikes, a Santa Cruz Blur LT Carbon. Justin, who has been riding a Nomad for the past year, took this bike out for its inaugural ride and afterwards declared it was the best bike he'd ever ridden. Shortly thereafter, we ordered one for him.

16.3 lbs. Hackaluggi

Wow! What a treat to build this Ibis Hackaluggi with Di2 and Leightweight wheels! This bike came in at 16.3 lbs! I outfit it with Challenge 35mm tubulars along with a classic NOS Rolls saddle. The new owner of the bike let me take it out for its first ride and I gotta tell you it was a dream to ride! It handled all the big bumps with the dampening of an air-matress and still had all the snap and acceleration of my road bike! The Hackaluggi frameset only comes in the luggi green and retails for $1699 with an Alpha Q fork by True Temper, Cane Creek headset & Thompson set-back seatpost.

Project Completion: Cento Uno

Here is the finished Cento Uno Superleggera. Without the seat bag, this bike (size large) weighed in at 15.7 lbs! The new owner of the bike, Dr. John, was thrilled to see the bike after riding his Dave Moulton-made "John Howard" bicycle for the last 30 years! If you look closely at the picture of Dr. John as we set him up on the trainer, you'll see Cento Uno SL #2 in the fore ground. This is the second SL we will be building, and we're hoping to start it next week. The rider and I are working on component selections, so stay tuned to see what we go with.

Project: Wilier Cento Uno

I'm excited about this week's big project: assembling the all-new Wilier Cento Uno Superleggera! The photos you see show the actual frame shot in the shop with some of what we will be assembling the bike with.

We will be building the bike with a complete Campagnolo Super Record 11-Speed grouppo along with some of the fixings you see at the left: Fizik Aliante saddle (my favorite!), Cinelli Ram Solo handlebar, super sweet Mavic Clipless pedals, Vittoria tires and more....if you're interested, come by the shop and see the project evolve from frameset to complete bike. I'll even make you an espresso if you want!

Some of you may recognize the small painting in the back ground of the frameset as a scene from one of the best pieces of road along the coast. Name the section of road, and I'll give you one of the new shop water bottles!
